Though the initial study was small, it provided more detailed information than other important great works such as The China Study. Dr. Esselstyn worked with a small group of heart patients over a longer period of time. He gave them a rigid dietary program to follow.

The results are nothing short of stunning. Patients quickly dropped their cholesterol levels to safe levels. Angiograms taken after several years showed no further progression of heart disease. In fact, some patients started reversing their heart disease.

Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease discusses the whole study in detail, as well as the challenges to overcome when switching to a WFPB diet. The book serves as a great inspiration!

About the author

Dr. Esselstyn was a heart surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic. He received his B.A. from Yale University and his M.D. from the Western Reserve University. He was a member of the 1956 USA rowing team that won a gold medal!

Despite enjoying his work and gaining some satisfaction from surgeries that relieve suffering, he was painfully faced with the fact that he was not able to cure the underlying causes of disease.

He then started delving through medical literature and noticed that chronic diseases were almost exclusively found in Western countries. In other regions, in particular Africa and Asia, chronic diseases were rare. Eventually this led to the revolutionary research findings as discussed in Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease..
